Daichi Matsushita (b. 1990, Aichi, Japan) graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, where he studied Nihonga (Japanese painting), and later completed his graduate studies in printmaking at the same institution. Grounded in both disciplines, he has developed a distinctive artistic practice. His work primarily focuses on birds—especially owls—rendered with meticulous detail and rich coloration. Through careful observation and a deep personal affinity for his subjects, Matsushita creates images that evoke both stillness and a strong sense of presence, transcending mere representation. The motif of the owl, often associated with wisdom and mystery, is also deeply connected to the artist’s personal experiences and relationships, forming a central element of his practice. Through depictions of birds and animals, he constructs a unique visual world that quietly captures subtle emotions and atmospheric presence. In recent years, Matsushita has expanded his practice beyond the frameworks of Nihonga and printmaking, incorporating diverse techniques. In 2025, he presented a two-person exhibition “OWLS” with Yu Seto at ShinQs Gallery 5, a space operated by SHIKISAISHA, marking a new development in his work. Alongside ongoing solo and group exhibitions, he continues to establish a distinctive position through his sustained exploration of avian motifs.
