Kazuyuki Mura (b. 1954, Ichihara, Chiba, Japan) is a painter who has developed his practice through extensive travels across the world. Since the 1970s, he has consistently explored a visual language centered on the act of drawing lines. He has spent extended periods working across Europe, Asia, and beyond—including Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, the United States, and Turkey—deepening his artistic practice through these experiences. For Mura, travel is not merely movement, but a fundamental condition of both artistic creation and life itself. While working across a wide range of media—including oil painting, encaustic, etching, drawing, and wood sculpture—the core of his practice remains the line. These lines are not refined toward completion; instead, they accumulate, overlap, and remain on the surface without erasure, embracing imperfection as an essential element of expression. Whether depicting landscapes, flowers, or animals, his work is grounded in a bodily understanding of line developed through life drawing. The coexistence of opposing qualities—naivety and sophistication, spontaneity and structure, intuition and experience—defines the distinctive character of his work. Since 2005, Mura has held continuous solo exhibitions at SHIKISAISHA Gallery. In 2025, he published the monograph Fūkon: The Breath of Line 1971–2025, marking 50 years of artistic practice. The “breath of line” that runs through his work continues to evolve to this day.
