Throughout his practice, Yuji Kanamaru has painted animals associated with the passage of time, such as ancient fish and turtles. He is known for a humorous style distinguished by his own distinctive surface textures.

In 2011, he began a new series of three-dimensional works. Bringing the world of his painted animals into three dimensions, these works make motifs that once stood quietly within the picture plane seem to appear suddenly in the real world, becoming all the more endearing.

“When we encounter animals, we unconsciously project our own wishes onto them.
As beloved pets, as family members, and as objects of awe. I have tried to express these feelings toward animals in the form of helmets that we wear.”

Entitled “KABUTO,” this exhibition presents sculptures based on human figures, a motif that appears only rarely even in his two-dimensional work. Works from the Card series are displayed on the walls. We invite you to experience Yuji Kanamaru’s continually evolving world.
