SHIKISAISHA GALLERY is pleased to present *Old Dogs Dream*, a solo exhibition by Mitsuko Taira, from November 7 to 21, 2026.

Through wood sculpture, Mitsuko Taira creates quiet, poetic worlds inhabited by animals. Drawing inspiration from the Bible, poetry, and folktales, she gives sculptural form to moments that seem to belong to larger, untold stories. Carved from camphor wood and carefully painted by hand, her animals are rendered with extraordinary sensitivity, evoking the softness of fur, the warmth of a living body, and even the faint shadows cast by eyelashes.

Underlying her practice is a profound tenderness toward living beings. Through their stillness, expressions, and carefully observed details, each sculpture conveys a distinct presence and suggests a story of its own.

*Old Dogs Dream* begins with a deeply personal experience: the artist's loss of a beloved companion. The exhibition considers the dog as seen through human eyes, the world as perceived by the dog, and the unknowable visions of dreams. Through her sculptures, Taira quietly explores the distance between beings who share their lives yet can never fully know one another's inner worlds.

**Artist Statement**

“Your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.”

This is a passage from the Bible.

It has been almost a year since my dearest companion, who had gradually grown old, fell into a deep and final sleep.

This exhibition, *Old Dogs Dream*, began with that deeply personal experience.

The dog as I see it.

The world as seen through the dog's eyes.

Dreams—visions that can never truly be known by anyone else.

This exhibition is an expression of the world that lies between us.
