Hibiki Adachi (b. 2002, Kyoto) graduated from the Sculpture Department at Hiroshima City University’s Faculty of Arts in 2025. He is currently pursuing graduate studies in sculpture at the same university, primarily creating stone sculptures in marble. Working closely with marble, a material formed over immense spans of geological time, Adachi explores traces and memories of life embedded within the stone, reflecting on the connections between life and death, and between the present and the past. Marble is formed through the transformation of sedimentary rock containing the remains of ancient marine organisms and other materials over vast periods of time. During the carving process, fossil-like forms occasionally emerge from within the stone. For Adachi, the repetitive acts of carving and polishing become a means of connecting with the memory of countless lives that once existed. Embracing these unexpected encounters, he works in dialogue with a material that embodies deep time, transforming the act of carving into a ritualistic practice through which he confronts life and death, past and present. In 2025, Adachi received both the Excellence Award and the Acquisition Award at the Hiroshima City University Graduation and Completion Works Exhibition. His work has been presented at venues including the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa and the Hiroshima Museum of Art, and is held in the collection of the Hiroshima City University Art Museum.
