Yasuhisa Yamamoto (born in 1963 in Kanagawa, Japan) studied oil painting at Musashino Art University and its graduate school, where he established his artistic practice while exhibiting in major open-call exhibitions such as the Dokuritsu Exhibition and the Yasui Award Exhibition. Centering his practice on the theme of “abundance,” Yamamoto has continuously explored the relationship between humans and nature in contemporary society. Working with water-based media such as casein tempera, acrylic, and ink on canvas, panel, and Japanese paper, his paintings incorporate traces of bleeding, layering, and erasure, evoking a soft accumulation of time. His process, which embraces chance and improvisation, creates a visual language that can be seen as a reconsideration of a distinctly Japanese pictorial space. Motifs including human figures, animals, flowers, mountains, and water appear as rounded, full-bodied forms that embody a sense of vitality and harmony. In an age dominated by material and informational excess, these images recall primordial landscapes while quietly questioning the essence of “abundance” that we are in danger of losing. Since his first solo exhibition at SHIKISAISHA in 2009, Yamamoto has maintained an ongoing relationship with the gallery, presenting solo exhibitions there in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2025. In 2017, he held the exhibition “Images of Reverie and Fragment” at Bunkamura Gallery, organized by SHIKISAISHA, and in 2026 he presented “Scenes of Abundance” at ShinQs Gallery 5 (SHIKISAISHA). In recent years, he has expanded his practice beyond painting to include sculpture and drawing. Yamamoto is a member of the Dokuritsu Art Association and currently serves as a professor at Musashino Art University, where he continues to play a significant role in both artistic practice and education.
