Yukino Mashimo was born in Gunma, Japan in 1984 and graduated from the Painting Department of Tokyo Zokei University in 2007. Drawing inspiration from motifs found in traditional Japanese painting — such as flowers, moths, and ornamental patterns — Mashimo creates meticulously detailed monochrome works using black ink and manga drawing pens. Despite the restrained palette of black and white, her dense compositions and subtle gradations generate richly layered worlds that combine ornamentation, vitality, and an uncanny atmosphere. Since her graduation project, Mashimo has continuously pursued monochrome expression, deliberately eliminating color in order to push beyond the perceived limits of her practice. Her works move fluidly between the visual languages of nihonga and manga, revealing an affinity between classical and contemporary Japanese culture while infusing traditional imagery with a distinctly contemporary sensibility. Mashimo first attracted attention through “project N 35” at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery in 2008, and was selected for the VOCA Exhibition in 2010. She has presented solo exhibitions at Yuka Sasahara Gallery (2010), “Artist Kingdom: Yukino Mashimo / Yume no Okusoko” at Takasaki Museum of Art (2011), Hara Museum ARC Café d’Art (2016), and “Tan-deki” at Roppongi Hills A/D Gallery (2018), among others. She has also participated in institutional exhibitions at Arts Maebashi (2013) and The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma (2017). In 2022, Mashimo received the Corporate Mecenat Gunma Arts and Culture Encouragement Award, accompanied by the commemorative exhibition “Yukino Mashimo: Embracing Black” at Yamato Gallery Hall.
