彫刻家。木彫を中心に、動物を主なモチーフとした作品を制作する。
自身の作品を「自刻像」と呼ぶように、動物の姿を借りて自己の内面や思考、感情を投影し、彫刻というかたちに昇華する独自の表現を追求している。

作品制作においては、

1. モチーフは動物であること

2. 造形は美しくあること（＝彫刻としての感動）

3. 社会や歴史、自然観といった明確なメッセージがあること

という3つの原則を掲げ、彫刻が持つ空間性や身体性を最大限に活かす造形に取り組んできた。

犬や猫、神獣など、身近でありながら象徴的な動物を題材に、精緻な造形を通して鑑賞者に実存的なリアリティや共感を喚起する作品群を展開。一見アイロニカルに見える表現も、根底には人間存在や社会への深いまなざしが通底している。

近年は、より普遍的かつ原初的な思考へと関心を広げ、「Atoma/Kenon（原子／空虚）」シリーズでは、“実存を構成する微粒子”としての「Atoma」と、“確かに在る不在”としての「Kenon（空虚）」という哲学的概念を彫刻として可視化。目に見えないかたちや曖昧な実在をいかに捉えるかという問いを、作品に込めている。

オンライン化が進み、情報がデータに還元されていく時代において、下山はあえて彫刻の「実在感」や「サイズ感」にこだわる。アナログな手法によってこそ立ち上がる、身体的で共鳴的な経験のあり方を信じ、彫刻という形式を通して私たちの思考と感覚を揺さぶり続けている。

Sculptor.
Working primarily in wood carving, he creates sculptures featuring animals as his main motifs. Referring to his own works as “self-sculptures,” he projects his inner world, thoughts, and emotions onto the forms of animals, pursuing an expression that sublimates them into the language of sculpture.

In his creative practice, he upholds three guiding principles:

1. The motif must be an animal.

2. The form must possess beauty — evoking the aesthetic emotion of sculpture.

3. The work must convey a clear message related to society, history, or views of nature.

With these principles, he has consistently explored sculptural forms that maximize the spatial and physical qualities inherent to sculpture.

Through motifs such as dogs, cats, and mythical beasts—creatures that are both familiar and symbolic—he presents works that evoke existential reality and empathy in the viewer through refined modeling. Although his expressions may sometimes appear ironic, they are underpinned by a profound gaze toward human existence and society.

In recent years, his interest has expanded toward more universal and primordial thought. In his Atoma/Kenon (Atom/Void)series, he visualizes philosophical concepts: “Atoma,” as the microscopic particles that constitute existence, and “Kenon,” as the void that paradoxically exists in absence. These works pose questions about how to perceive unseen forms and ambiguous realities.

In an era of digitalization, where information is increasingly reduced to data, Shimoyama remains committed to the tangible presence and scale of sculpture. He believes in the resonant, bodily experience that can arise only through analog means, and continues to challenge our perception and sensibility through the sculptural form.
