English below SHIKISAISHA is pleased to present Visual Retreat, a solo exhibition by Julie Inoue, at ShinQs Gallery 5. Julie Inoue creates paintings that evoke psychological landscapes centered on the motif of the sky, quietly capturing fragments of memory and warmth embedded in everyday life. Influenced by her experiences abroad, her works incorporate elements of ambiguity and incompleteness, forming contemplative pictorial spaces that gently awaken personal and introspective sensations in the viewer. The landscapes she depicts do not refer to specific locations, but rather emerge from layered fragments of memory and emotion, existing as both deeply personal and subtly universal images. The title of the exhibition, Visual Retreat, refers to a space or moment of stepping away from the routines of daily life in order to restore and realign one’s inner state. Inoue’s paintings function as such spaces—inviting viewers into a quiet environment where they can reconnect with their own inner perceptions. The open and indeterminate nature of her compositions allows each viewer to project their own memories and feelings, giving rise to individual experiences of reflection and recovery. Her works are characterized by subtle gradations, overlapping layers, and delicate shifts in tone, embracing the inherent imperfections of the human hand. These elements resist fixed interpretation, instead expanding the act of viewing itself and allowing a sense of time, stillness, and emotional nuance to unfold within the image.
