From March 8 to March 23, 2024, SHIKISAISHA will present the gallery’s first solo exhibition by Shoko Mihira. The exhibition features approximately 30 works, offering an overview of the artist’s development—from early pieces created at the beginning of his practice to his most recent works. Mihira’s works place importance on individual narratives and emotionally resonant experiences, drawing inspiration from his own life, encounters with others, and events in the world. His long-standing engagement with BMX street culture for over a decade also forms a foundation of his creative practice. These “monsters” are made using borosilicate glass, a highly durable material that resists deterioration over time and is strong enough to withstand impact. Through this exhibition, viewers can experience the striking physical presence unique to glass as a medium. The exhibition presents works produced between around 2019, when the artist began creating, and 2023. The early works carry a distinctly different atmosphere from his current practice, making this a rare opportunity to trace the evolution of his work. “I would be happy if visitors could enjoy discovering this progression.” (Shoko Mihira)
