Shoko Mihira (b. 1979, Tokyo, Japan) is an artist who creates sculptural works primarily using glass. He studied under the American glass artist Zii and works with the flameworking technique as the foundation of his practice. By melting and shaping borosilicate glass with a torch, Mihira produces delicate and organic forms. By encapsulating liquids and threads within the glass, he visualizes internal emotions and experiences, while the refraction and transmission of light generate layered and ever-changing expressions. The smooth yet durable structure of the glass embodies both emptiness and material solidity, creating a unique presence. His works often take the form of monsters inspired by everyday life, personal experiences, and encounters with others. These figures, while humorous in appearance, reflect human emotions and memories, each carrying a narrative that invites empathy and connection with the viewer. In recent years, Mihira has presented his work in exhibitions and international art fairs, including the “Monster” series in collaboration with Mayuno Kobayashi, where his sculptural practice engages in dialogue with painting.
