角谷紀章 個展「The Ambiguity of Memory」

この度、北京にある京一原绘画廊にて、角谷紀章個展 「The Ambiguity of Memory」 を開催いたします。中国での初個展となる本展では、作家の代表的なシリーズに加え、北京滞在中に撮影したスナップ写真をもとに制作された新作も発表いたします。

角谷の作品は、スマートフォンで切り取った日常の風景を起点にしています。しかしそれは単なる「写し」ではなく、アクリル絵具によって細部まで描きこまれた空間に、すりガラスやカーテンを通して見るような不明瞭さを加えることで、意識的に曖昧さが導入されます。

この「見えすぎない」構造は、鑑賞者それぞれの記憶や経験を呼び覚まし、イメージを重ねることで作品を完成へと導きます。例えば〈Frosted Window〉や〈Curtain〉シリーズでは、具体的な対象を明示せず、観る者の内面と作品の間に共鳴を生み出します。また近年の〈Fog〉シリーズでは、日常の中で「見て」「見逃している」私たちの視覚のあり方そのものを問いかけています。

高度なテクノロジーが視覚情報を即座に解析する時代にあって、角谷はむしろ不完全で曖昧なイメージを提示することで、「人間にとってのリアリティとは何か」を再考させます。

本展では、北京という都市を実際に歩き、そこで切り取られた現地の風景が新作に反映されています。都市の喧騒や日常の断片が、角谷独自のフィルターを通して描き出されることで、「見えないこと」から立ち上がる想像と記憶の連なりを体験いただける場となるでしょう。

We are pleased to announce Kisho Kakutani’s solo exhibition “The Ambiguity of Memory”, held at JING YI YUAN HUI ART GALLERY in Beijing. Marking his first solo exhibition in China, this presentation features not only his signature series but also new works created from snapshots taken during his recent stay in Beijing.

Kakutani begins his painting process by capturing everyday scenes with a smartphone. Yet, his works are never simple reproductions. Through meticulous acrylic rendering, he overlays layers of ambiguity—like frosted glass or curtains—that obscure and filter the image.

This deliberate obscurity awakens the memories and experiences of each viewer, allowing the paintings to be “completed” through their personal associations. In series such as Frosted Window and Curtain, the subject remains undefined, leaving room for the audience’s imagination to resonate with the work. More recently, in the Fog series, Kakutani examines how we both see and overlook the world in our daily lives.

In an era when advanced technologies instantly analyze visual data, Kakutani instead proposes incomplete and ambiguous images that challenge us to reconsider what “reality” means for human perception.

For this exhibition, the artist walked through Beijing, photographing fragments of the cityscape that were then translated into new paintings. The resulting works transform the everyday into hazy and layered visions, offering viewers an experience of how imagination and memory arise precisely from what cannot be clearly seen.
