SHIKISAISHA is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Yasuhisa Yamamoto.
The exhibition features approximately 15 works, including paintings in tempera and other media and works in watercolor, ranging from a modified size 80 format to small pieces.
We invite you to explore Yamamoto's world.
Artist's statement (October 2017)
“Recently, Dr. Hawking revised his estimate of the Earth's remaining lifespan from 1,000 years to just 100 years, bringing that prediction forward by no less than 900 years. Has the countdown to destruction already begun, through global warming, nuclear issues, and other threats?
The living creatures created by the god who dwells in this beautiful blue Earth possess a beauty of infinite variety and true mystery. Many have already disappeared from this world through changes in the natural environment and the actions of humankind.
Among them, humans have survived, evolved, and acquired what I consider the most beautiful forms. They have long been the subject of my paintings.
For this exhibition, entitled ‘To all creatures,’ I intend to focus on the resonance between the beautiful forms of human beings and those of other living creatures.
In recent years, as a counterpoint to today's abundance of information and material possessions, I have imagined and painted scenes from a time when human beings stood naked upon the earth, scenes in which people might have been rich in both spirit and body. The figures in my works are symbols of this ‘richness,’ and their forms are rounded. I hope these forms evoke a psychological sense of softness, allowing viewers to sense a rich ‘premonition’ of the future rather than one of destruction.
Over the past few years, I have also given rounded forms to the supports on which I paint, as well as to the figures within the works. In this exhibition, too, I hope that the formal resonance between the works' soft shapes and the forms of the humans and other living creatures depicted will embody a richness that offers hope for the future.”

Yasuhisa Yamamoto
Born in Kanagawa in 1963.
Completed his MFA at Musashino Art University, where he currently serves as a professor.
His work explores the theme of “abundance,”
examining the relationship between humans and nature.
Through motifs such as human figures, animals, flowers, mountains, and water,
he evokes a sense of primal fullness and harmony.
Using water-based media including casein tempera, acrylic, and ink,
his soft surfaces—marked by bleeds and textures—
gently engage the viewer’s sensory experience.
