Tetsuo Mizu

ミズテツオ（1944年東京都生まれ – 2025年）は、「国際信号旗」をモチーフとした独自の絵画表現により、1980年代以降ヨーロッパを中心に高い評価を得た画家である。

海上における船舶間の通信に用いられる信号旗を組み合わせ、タイトルや構成要素として取り入れた「フラッグ・シリーズ」により一躍注目を集め、イタリア、フランス、スペインなどに長く居住しながら各地で精力的に制作・発表を行った。1987年にはローマ近郊アンツィオの国際美術展に招聘され特別賞を受賞、サンタ・アンナ教会のステンドグラス制作も手がけるなど、欧州において確かな評価を築いた。

1989年にはバルセロナにて「ピカソ・ダリ・シャガール・ミズ」展、1990年にはフランス・ボーヌにて「ダリ・ミズ」展が開催されるなど、その活動はヨーロッパ画壇において特筆すべき位置を占めている。

その作風は、極細のラインによって区切られたマットで量感のある画面構成を特徴とし、抽象絵画でありながら詩的な抒情性を内包している。信号旗に由来する幾何学的構成や色彩は、イタリアの光や広場にたなびく旗の記憶と結びつきつつ、浮世絵や花札といった日本的視覚文化とも響き合う独自の表現として展開された。

また、Art Basel、FIAC、Art Rioなど国際的なアートフェアにも多数出展し、1998年には長野冬季オリンピックのフィギュアスケート会場「ホワイトリング」において、全長32メートルに及ぶ陶壁画を制作するなど、大規模な公共空間における仕事も手がけている。

四季彩舎とは創業当初より深い関係を築き、現在のギャラリーロゴのデザインもミズテツオによるものである。その作品と思想は、今日においてもなお新たな視点と解釈をもたらし続けている。

Tetsuo Mizù (1944–2025, Tokyo, Japan) was a painter internationally recognized for his distinctive visual language based on maritime signal flags, gaining particular prominence in Europe from the 1980s onward. His “Flag Series,” which incorporates international maritime signal flags as compositional and symbolic elements, brought him wide attention. Living and working across Italy, France, and Spain, he actively exhibited throughout Europe. In 1987, he was invited to an international exhibition in Anzio near Rome, where he received a special award, and was commissioned to create stained glass for the Church of Santa Anna. His position within the European art scene is evidenced by exhibitions such as Picasso, Dalí, Chagall, Mizù (Barcelona, 1989) and Dalí–Mizù (Beaune, 1990), placing his work in dialogue with major figures of modern art. Mizù’s paintings are characterized by finely delineated lines and a matte, volumetric surface, combining geometric abstraction with a lyrical sensibility. While rooted in the visual system of signal flags, his work also reflects the light and atmosphere of Italian piazzas, as well as resonances with traditional Japanese visual culture such as ukiyo-e and hanafuda. He participated in major international art fairs including Art Basel, FIAC, and Art Rio, and in 1998 created a monumental ceramic mural measuring 32 meters for the White Ring arena at the Nagano Winter Olympics. Mizù maintained a long-standing relationship with SHIKISAISHA Gallery since its founding, and also designed the gallery’s current logo. His work continues to offer new perspectives and interpretations beyond his lifetime.
