Yasufumi Koyama (b. 1987, Kawasaki, Kanagawa, Japan) is an artist who develops collage-based works grounded in photography. After working at a photography studio in Tokyo, he became an independent photographer in 2012, primarily working in music and fashion media, and began his art practice in 2020. His work is based on collecting fragments of landscapes and visual experiences encountered through travel, which are then reconstructed into compositions filled with discovery, surprise, and new encounters. By intersecting the documentary nature of photography with the constructed quality of collage, his works embody contrasting elements such as intensity and stillness, boldness and delicacy. Rather than simply depicting scenery, his practice reconfigures fragments of memory and perception, challenging conventional ways of seeing and offering new perspectives. In 2024, he held his first solo exhibition, Kukakushoku, at SHIKISAISHA Gallery. The exhibition presented an experimental series that reconstructs urban landscapes through layered compositions of fragmented images and color, marking a significant step in his development as an artist. In recent years, he has gained recognition through open-call exhibitions, receiving the Special Prize at the 27th TARO Award (2023). He was further awarded the Grand Prize at the 4th Makurazaki International Art Award for his work Mumyō – Kagoshima, establishing him as an emerging artist to watch.
