Exhibition Overview
Modern Mythology: Monsters & Apparitions explores how three contemporary Japanese artists reinterpret the tradition of *yokai*—supernatural beings that have long visualized invisible emotions and spiritual presence in Japanese culture.
Through painting and glass, Naoya Oshima, Mayuno Kobayashi, and Shoko Mihira each create their own distinctive "monsters," transforming folklore, memory, and everyday experience into contemporary mythologies. Together, their works offer poetic reflections on the complexities of the human spirit in the 21st century.
About SHIKISAISHA GALLERY
Founded in 1996 in Tokyo, SHIKISAISHA GALLERY is dedicated to contemporary Japanese art. The gallery represents both established and emerging artists whose practices are rooted in Japanese aesthetics while engaging with contemporary artistic expression. Through exhibitions and international art fairs, the gallery introduces Japanese contemporary art to audiences worldwide.
大嶋直哉 Naoya Oshima
1995年岐阜県生まれ。
東京藝術大学大学院博士後期課程修了博士号取得。
既存の写真や物語、伝統的な表現など、
すでに存在するイメージを手がかりに絵画制作を行う。
それらを再構成し、引用や模写といった手法を通して、
本物と作り物のあいだを行き来するイメージを立ち上げる。
見ることや知ることの確かさを問い直し、
曖昧な像の中に新たなリアリティを提示する。
Naoya Oshima
Born in Gifu in 1995.
Ph.D. in Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts.
His practice engages with pre-existing images—such as photographs, narratives, and traditional forms—
using them as a basis for painting.
Through reconstruction, quotation, and acts of copying,
his works move between what is real and what is fabricated.
By questioning the certainty of seeing and knowing,
he reveals alternative forms of reality within ambiguous images.
三平硝子 Shoko Mihira
1979年東京生まれ。
日常生活や個人的な経験から得た内面的な感情をもとに、
ユニークなモンスターの世界をガラスで表現する。
バーナーワーク技法を用い、ガラス管を炎で溶 かしながら精巧に成形し、
内部に液体や糸を封入することで内面世界を可視化する。
コミカルでありながらどこか謎めいたモンスターたちは、
独自の物語性と余韻を感じさせる存在として提示される。
Shoko Mihira
Born in Tokyo in 1979.
His work explores a unique world of monsters, shaped by inner emotions and personal experiences drawn from everyday life.
Using burner-work techniques, he melts and forms glass tubes into intricate shapes,
encasing liquids and threads to visualize an internal world.
Both humorous and enigmatic, his creatures evoke a distinct sense of narrative and lingering presence.
小林繭乃 Mayuno Kobayashi
1993年愛知県生まれ。
女子美術大学大学院修士課程修了。
日本画の技法を基盤に制作。
日常生活や記憶、喜怒哀楽といった内面的な感情から生まれる曖昧で流動的なイメージを、
動物や空想上の存在の姿に置き換えて表現する。
コミカルなキャラクターとして描かれるそれらの存在には、
人間の感情や問題が投影されており、作家の内面世界が反映されている。
Mayuno Kobayashi
Born in Aichi in 1993.
Completed her MFA at Joshibi University of Art and Design.
Working with techniques rooted in Nihonga.
Her practice translates ambiguous and fluid images—derived from everyday life, memory, and emotional states—into animals and imaginary beings.
Often depicted as humorous characters, these figures reflect human emotions and concerns, revealing the artist’s inner world.
