Natsuko Yamazaki is a painter whose practice centers on giving form to an indefinable sensation—something that cannot be fully articulated in words. Her work explores fleeting emotions, memories, and subtle shifts in perception that arise in everyday life. By visualizing these ambiguous and unnameable sensations through materials and motifs, Yamazaki seeks to approach the essence of art itself. A defining feature of her work is the use of light-absorbing materials such as alkyd resin and glitter. These materials create semi-relief surfaces that capture and reflect light, allowing the works to shift in appearance depending on the viewer’s perspective and surrounding environment. Through this interplay, layers of memory and emotional presence quietly emerge. Yamazaki regards art as a force that illuminates the human spirit and enriches the world. The act of stepping into the unknown—though often solitary and demanding courage—serves as a fundamental driving force in her creative practice. Born in Gifu, Japan in 1980. She graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts (Oil Painting) in 2006. She received the Sankei Shimbun Award at the Art Salon Grand Prize Exhibition in 2011. In 2025, she held her first solo exhibition “Kirakira” at SHIKISAISHA. She continues to present her work through exhibitions and art fairs in Japan and abroad.
