Kisho Kakutani positions his work as a “tool for evoking imagination in others,” creating paintings that activate the viewer’s memory and perception through ambiguity. Based on snapshot photography, his images often contain fragments whose original contexts have already become indistinct. Through the process of painting, these fragments are reconstructed into layered visual experiences. Blurring, motion, and the use of fluid mediums dissolve clear contours, allowing each viewer to perceive their own internal landscape. In his representative series such as “Frosted Window” and “Curtain,” motifs like frosted glass and curtains function as visual “noise” that intervenes between the work and the viewer’s gaze. Rather than obstructing vision, this interference stimulates imagination, prompting the emergence of a personal sense of “reality.” While influenced by the aesthetics and sensibilities of traditional Japanese painting, Kakutani reinterprets these elements through a contemporary lens. His works subtly engage the viewer’s memory, bringing forth diverse images of everyday life. Born in Kobe, Japan in 1993. He completed a Doctoral Degree (Fine Arts) at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2022. In the same year, he held his first solo exhibition at SHIKISAISHA. He is currently a Research Associate at Tokyo University of the Arts.
